Primary Elements Arte-Pigments (PE) are Translucent hand milled custom crafted colors (over 200 ) mixed with mica and other minerals. Primary Elements are sold as a dry paint pigment.

They dissolve in any WATER soluble medium (cleans up with soap and water) PE’s mix easily in Acrylic mediums or gels-Varnish-Poly urethane gum binders –etc. In the Video the PE Arte-pigments were mixed in the Vivid Clear Acrylic Enamel. All ColourArte products are hand mixed and poured in USA

SUBJECT: Mixing your paint

Extra Step: When using Primary Elements Arte-Pigments you have a special step- 1/2 tsp dry Pigments mix with 1 oz.  (2 tablespoons) acrylic medium -mix WELL in 4 oz. salsa cup, I use the Vivid Clear acrylic Enamel I like how it looks and dries to a gloss magnifying the brilliance of the pigments.  Mix pigments in well till they totally dissolve.

Pouring medium:  There are many who eyeball and others who measure and weigh their ingredients:

20-25% pouring medium,  5-20% Floetrol , 10-25% PVA Glue combos. NO MATTER your choice your additives need to be mixed in BEFORE the water. YOU goal is to BOND your additive and acrylic base together into one smooth base. MIX well until they are smooth.

Water: What is not a specific science is a precise measurement of water.

Each acrylic base has a unique threshold (varying form manufacture to manufacture) of how much water it can accept before the  acrylic adhesion is compromised and “ crazing” occurs – ( WHICH IS WHY many artist use pouring  medium as insurance.)

Each Pigment also has a unique threshold and speed in which the color accepts water.

It is ALWAYS best to add your water slowly (add a tsp or less of water at a time). WHY? The pigments build, swell and accept the water at their own pace, there is NO rushing this process.  Even if you know precisely how much water should go into a color you’ve mixed a dozen times, THERE is NO CUTTING corners of this part of the paint mixing. DO NOT make the mistake of dumping in all the water at once, you will have to mix and mix, and risk it still will not come out right.

Yes, the mixing is the tedious part but It can be relaxing and you eventually will learn the feel of the paint and know when it is the right consistency.

Which is the KEY to your success

  • Too thick-Paint will drop of stick in clumps OR paint flow “breaks” and then starts again.
  • TOO thin- its runs off stick like water
  • Perfect Flows evenly like a heavy cream off the popsicle stick

Silicone:WD 40 Specialist Water Resistance silicone

Once you have the perfect consistency you can add a couple shots Silicone or Dimethicone.

Silicone Mixed in all colors BUT Black
